In 1914, cartoonist Windor McKay caused a sensation with his vaudeville act, wherein he would "command" Gertie, an animated brontosaur-like creature, to perform tricks, vanishing from the room and appearing in the film itself at the conclusion.Gertie was hugely influential on an entire generation of animators and today is enshrined at Disney's Hollywood Studios in the form of an ice cream shop.
